Kisspeptin

Kisspeptin

Kisspeptin is a peptide hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating the reproductive system. It is primarily known for its involvement in initiating the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn stimulates the production of sexual hormones like luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. Kisspeptin is produced by the KISS1 gene and interacts with its receptor, GPR54. It is essential for the onset of puberty and the maintenance of fertility. Beyond reproduction, kisspeptin has also been linked to other physiological processes, such as appetite regulation and mood modulation.
